Facebook I thought we were friends??
Facebook and I have had an amazing relationship, but Facebook breaking up is so hard to do. Man, I have been with you through thick and thin, never missing a day and filling my wall and other friends with photos, recipes, travel photos, birthdays and sharing great websites that I think others will find interesting. You know your a DRUG..an Addiction because I wake up every morning to see how my friends are doing, seeing baby photos from a distance, finding out about events, marriages, breakups. It goes with my coffee in the morning. My husband hates it and will not use it. I had to explain to him how Facebook worked one day and his eyes rolled. He said “So, let me see if I get this right…you get sent friend requests from friends, family, co workers and you have to accept them. Then you have a wall that you can put whatever you want on to show your friends. And they write about what they are doing, and post photos” He got that part. But when I told him about some of the “drama” on Facebook he said who has time for it?? What did we do before Facebook? We picked up the phone and called people. We had to mail our baby or birthday photos or share our trip photos when our friends came for a visit. But people are so far away now and it is faster to make announcements on our wall. Postage stamps are too expensive and people want to share things right away. So Facebook that is why I use you. I can announce to people that I am a Grandmother again and share the photos right away, or show friends (who are interested) my amazing Australia trip photos complete with a real Kangaroo. But the other time I am on Facebook seriously sucks up my time like a giant vacuum. OK, admit it, you look at Facebook first thing in the morning and probably before you go to bed. You don’t? OK maybe I do have a problem. But in 2014 our relationship changed. I noticed Facebook was more distant. Oh before I forget. Before any designers, Photoshop people say anything..I made the visual above with simple graphic tools. I am a blogger, and would never get a job doing graphics so your job is safe.
Facebook videos vs Youtube videos
Have you heard the latest? Youtube is a serious competitor to Facebook so they are now giving directly uploaded videos to Facebook more Klout. They want the video business as it is massive. Ask anyone who makes money from Youtube advertisements. Now there is something else for them to control. Test it for yourself. Surprised they have not bought up Instagram or Pinterest. Pinterest is very addicting as it is very visual and has helped a ton of brides decorate for their weddings, birthday parties ideas, and I love the gardening tips.
Where did my Facebook friends go??
One morning I woke up and saw that FB decided that only a certain number of friends could see my posts. Somehow he came up with this logic that not everything I had to say was important to my friends and he would choose which friends saw what I had to say. How do you choose? They are still my friends. Unless I tag someone/everyone they will not see it. Was my original recipe not good enough? Your finding my photos of my grand children a tad boring? It is friends like me who made your business what it is today. If ordinary people like me left..what would you have? We know that will not happen, but look how the Internet evolves. Remember Myspace? We get fed a regular diet of ads from you that you leave little cookie crumbs on our computers so you see what we might find interesting. Seriously, type something like I nearly “peed my pants” on a post and you will probably see an ad for “Depends” undergarments. Remember that day I posted about ideas for trips with my husband? Darned if I did not see travel ads for months afterwards. If your single you will see dating ads. If your over 50-60 you see travel ads. And every Facebook post you make is being looked at by a computer that says..hmmmm they like cruises eh? Fire up the cruise ads!! We get it, but seriously some people don’t know how Facebook works. Every post you make is being watched in order to serve up some nice freshly baked Facebook ads.
Facebook business pages
OK Facebook I get it. None of my friends want to hear my constant chatter about getting healthy so I did what you said and made a Facebook business page. In 2014 I saw a lot of reach and even got a few customers. But then 2015 came and BAM. Now the rules changed for Facebook. For all those people that came to read my posts that took me ages to attract are not seeing my posts anymore. They are being held to ransom. FACT: you depend on ads to pay the bills, I am an entrepreneur and self employed, I get it. But now everyone is trying to find ways to get around getting their posts in front of these people again. Your so clever, telling companies they should be on Facebook, and to make great fan pages, get a ton of fans and then say..oh umm the rules changed. You have to pay for ALL OF those customers to see what you write. But I still do not understand how you choose who sees what.
For example: This is a new post and I wrote about something that I learned about Ovarian Cancer and who is HIGH risk. I guess Cancer was something that Facebook did not want the people on my page to see because it got a reach of 4 . I should have started with telling you that my business page is about Health and Wellness. Now further down I found this cute video of a baby that I could really relate to. I uploaded it to my page and BAM..394 Reach. You can click the link above or here is the script: A Dad says to a baby You’re FAT and the baby starts crying. Entertainment value 10/10, Educational value 0/10. Babies, cats, dogs, dashcams from Russia…now they seem to do well but do they relate to your business?
Facebook changes how you do business
So what I do now is try to get people off of Facebook so they can talk to me directly without Facebook getting in between us. Sorry Facebook I know your a business too, but I tried your ads and they sucked and the approval process was frustrating. You ever see those weird metal puzzles that you have to figure out how to unlock them..seriously do not know how to describe the kind of frustration I felt but imagine trying to do those puzzles in the dark. First you have to find the right image, it has to be eye catching or no one will see it, then there is the wording and the things you can not say. Then tick tock..wait for approval. I guess we will have to do what the scammers do on dating sites. Hide our websites like this —-> want more information about me go here…that world wide web address and then the words full of bliss and it is a Canadian site… I own dating sites and the scammers would say contact me at Jeff and the put the word scammer at the hot place (hotmail is what they were trying to say) Do we have to stoop that low?
Facebook breaking up is so hard to do
I have shut down my facebook at least 10 times today. But my darn iPhone dings when people mention my name..Damn, there it goes again. OK, not an emergency…someone just wanted to say they would die if they lived in Canada cause it is so cold here. Well I did not float away with the rain when I lived in the UK. OK back to this blog.
Do you have a LOVE/Hate relationship with Facebook? How many minutes a day would you say your on it? Do you shut it down and only go there a couple of times a day?
Now if I was a newspaper like Huffington Post maybe Facebook would love me more. But I love Huffington Post too Facebook so I understand. Anyone know of a Facebook app that stops how much time you spend on there??
Have a great day.
